LACCD Distance Education Committee

January 9, 2006 via CCCConfer

Members Present: John Clerx (District), Eric Ichon (West), David Jordan (Mission), Mark Lampert (Valley)

The CCCConfer meeting instructions may not have reached most Committee members prior to the meeting. Due to this the meeting was brief and another meeting via CCCConfer was scheduled for January 23, 2006 from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. David Jordan will email all Committee members with instructions.

Marion Heyn has had to resume illness leave and has resigned as DE Coordinator at LAVC. Mark Lampert has taken on these duties. He can be reached at lamperma@lavc.edu.

Since the Vice Presidents’ Council is meeting this Friday, January 6, 2006 we agreed to finalize the following motion which was originally discussed during our December 7, 2005 meeting.

Skidmore/Jordan: The LACCD DE Committee recommends that the District continues to support alternative methods of instructional delivery, including Internet-based delivery; and recommends a standardized course management system (CMS) with the costs to be paid by each individual campus via a district assessment. Criteria will be developed by the LACCD distance education committee to ensure the standard CMS continues to meet the needs of the LACCD. The distance education committee will evaluate the effectiveness/utility of the standard CMS on a yearly basis and make recommendations based on their findings.

Since the final minutes from our December 7th meeting have not yet been approved we reconfirmed our support of the following motion which was approved at that meeting.

Jordan/Ichon: The LACCD DE Committee recommends that the ETUDES Classic contract be renewed for 2006-2007, with TTIP funds covering the $33,000 (Level 7) or less fees for licensing and hosting; and that TTIP also pay the $16,000 2006-07 ETUDES Alliance membership fees for all 8 colleges interested in continuing their use of ETUDES.

Mr. Clerx announced that the District has decided to go forward with the use of a single Admissions application for online students. This means that online students will be able to take online courses from any of our Colleges without having to apply for admissions at each individual college. It was noted that online students using ETUDES NG will have access to all their LACCD online courses on their personal homepage facilitating their access to these classes.
